About Stephanie
Stephanie McLean is a lawyer who practices primarily in the area of labour law, bringing her diverse background in government, in-house roles and private practice. She has called the island home since 2019, and resides in the city of Colwood with her husband Shane, their son , and their three dogs. She previously served the people of Alberta as the MLA for Calgary Varsity, and later as the Minister of Service Alberta and Status of Women. She’s proud to have spearheaded innovative initiatives, making Alberta the first province to introduce non-binary identity documents, increase female representation on the boards of publicly traded companies, and implement protections against predatory lending.

Executive Accomplishments

Oversaw the creation and development of the Ministry of Status of Women including organizational structure and entrenchment of mandate. Created the Ministry’s community granting program and selected successful grant applicants for 2016 and 2017.

Worked with the Minister of the Treasury Board and Finance to develop the Government’s first Diversity and Inclusion policy.

Led the province’s first Proclamation of Sexual Violence Awareness Month and oversaw the first Commitment to End Sexual Violence. Brought together ten government ministries and multiple community organizations to deliver a coordinated, province-wide response.

Co-Chaired and hosted the 2016 Federal/ Provincial/ Territorial meeting of Ministers responsible for the Status of Women. Developed and oversaw a six-month mentorship program for Calgary women to increase gender equality.
Legislative Accomplishments

Act to End Predatory Lending, ensuring the lowest rates of payday lending in the country, with significant public approval;

Vital Statistics and Life Events Modernization Act, Alberta is the first jurisdiction to amend its vital statistics legislation and respond to expectations for modern service delivery and an inclusive, compassionate approach to major life events - including the implementation of non-binary identity documents;

Fair Trading Amendment Act, changes brought in to allow for increased oversight of Alberta’s Motor Vehicle Industry Council, which was under significant scrutiny;

Consumer Protection Act, which overhauled Alberta’s consumer protection legislation;

Act to Empower Utility Consumers, expanding the mandate of the Advocate to include mediation of water in light of public concerns over inexplicably high-water bills.

Amended the Residential Tenancies (Safer Spaces for Victims of Domestic Violence) Amendment Act to allow victims of family violence to end a residential tenancy agreement without financial penalty.
